A panel discussion was held on the present and future of the mining sector in Kosovo

Foreign direct investments are very important for the development of the mining industry in Kosovo. This is how it was assessed at the table: “The present and the future of the mining sector in Kosovo – analysis of foreign direct investments (FDI)”, which was held on Thursday at the Faculty of Geosciences at “Isa Boletini” University in Mitrovica (UIBM).

Among the recommendations that came out at the end, was the one for the leaders of the institutions, who were asked to create a political consensus, unlock all areas for research, tax policies and the distribution of income between different levels of government. It was also considered very necessary to gather all those who decide on mining policies in the country to guide the further development of the mining sector and the attraction of foreign direct investments.

The table was opened by the rector of UIBM – prof.dr. Alush Musaj, congratulated the leaders of the Faculty of Geosciences for this organization. He emphasized the importance of the development of the mining sector in Kosovo, for which academic expertise should be used.

Dean of the Faculty of Geosciences, prof. dr. Naser Peci said that the development strategy of the mining sector also represents an economic challenge. “The imperative must be to increase productivity throughout the economy through actions that can promote effective competition, developing organizational flexibility and appropriateness as well as building skills.”

As for foreign direct investment, he said new evidence shows that mining combined with increased foreign exchange earnings could be catalysts for some countries to improve their credit rating and attract long-term loan funds from abroad. . “The importance of cooperation between the University and stakeholders in the mining sector is related to the complementary function, as a world model, where production – science – higher education are closely connected in one circle”.

Panelists at this round table, where teachers, students, and officials of local and central institutions participated, were: Prof. dr. Kemajl Zeqiri from the Faculty of Geosciences, Getoar Mjeku, Deputy Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade, Skender Sallahu, Head of the Mining Department at the Ministry of Economy, as well as Gani Maliqi, Board Member at the Independent Commission for Mines and Minerals.
